To enable DAOS on mail.box databases or not?

Chris Whisonant |   | Tags:  mail attachments daos infrastructure server | Comments (5)  |  Visits (1,278)
Paul Mooney reminded us the other week that we should do this - and I agree! Over at Vaughan Rivett's blog, he's discussing some of the misunderstandings surrounding DAOS. He brings up several good points, but does question whether DAOS should be enabled on mail.box files. Of course, each situation may be a little different for every environment, so it's up to you to determine if you want to do this. But keep in mind that, like Vaughan states, DAOS is for any application - not just mail!

If I'm a daosified mail user and am using a CRM application to save a copy of an email message directly into the CRM, then if DAOS is enabled for the CRM application the attachment will be shared in DAOS! But if I want to send that email to a colleague and mail.box doesn't have DAOS enabled, then that attachment will be written to mail.box and then when it's delivered to the recipient's mail file DAOS would associate it as a duplicate from my mail file. But, if mail.box has DAOS enabled, then the attachment will never be pulled back out of DAOS (meaning there will not be the disk i/o associated with the transaction) and the router will know that it already existed in DAOS and not try to pull it back out. So, in most cases you will want to enable DAOS on your mail.box files. (Of course multiple server hops will not be aware of this currently, but for mail users on the same server it should be ok.)

Also remember that you'll need to enable transaction logging on your mail.box files. This may mean that you will need to disable the notes.ini settings for MailBoxDisableTXNLogging=1 and/or RM_NO_LOG_LARGE_OBJECTS=1. You will also need to manually enable transaction logging on the database with the router off by using load compact -T on each of your mail.box files.

Interesting Issue With Mail Moves and ODS48

Chris Whisonant |   | Tags:  mail database moves ods48 | Comments (1)  |  Visits (791)
Recently I have run into an issue with moving users (specifically the "Accelerated Create Replica" AdminP request) from 7.x or earlier to 8.x servers. The new replica that gets created on the 8.x server is not at ODS48. The CREATE_R8_DATABASES=1 setting is correct on all servers. I have checked with IBM and this is similar to an internal technote.

So, in the meantime, I have whipped up some code to find databases not at ODS48, dump them into an Indirect File, and run a compact -v -n -c on them to enable design and "body" compression and perform the copy-style compact to update it to the new On-Disk Structure. :)

Launching Basic Mode for MailTo: links

Chris Whisonant |   | Tags:  basic mail default notes | Comments (5)  |  Visits (2,544)
Someone sent me an email earlier today with an interesting question. Consider that you want to rollout Lotus Notes 8 Standard but only use the Basic configuration (let's consider that the computers only have 512MB RAM, but a memory upgrade will be deployed later). When doing this with Notes as the default mail application, the Standard configuration will be launched. How can you change this?
  1. Open the registry editor.
  2. Navigate to hkey_local_machine > software > clients > mail > lotus notes > protocols > mailto > shell > open > command
  3. The (Default) value is C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\notes.exe -defini %1
  4. Right-click (Default) and choose "Modify"
  5. Change the value to C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\notes.exe -sa -defini %1
  6. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs
  7. Change the mail application to Outlook Express and click Apply
  8. Change the mail application back to Lotus Notes and click OK
  9. Click a mailto: link on a webpage and this will launch the Basic Configuration of Lotus Notes!
Note: I should have looked at the devWorks posting that the person sent me along with the email because the solution was (partly) posted there as a response. Over there the solution does not detail what you change the registry value to - just that you change it.

Also, as another addendum to the solution posted at devWorks, this will work with IE and Firefox (I presume it will also work with Opera or whatever else you may use...)

This tip is always popular...

Chris Whisonant |   | Tags:  mail archiving | Comments (10)  |  Visits (672)
...really popular!! Every time I tell someone this they flip out!

To make manual mail archiving easier, all you have to do is create a folder in your mail file titled "Archive" (with the capital "A" ). Then just drag and drop any emails into that folder. If you have archive settings enabled for your mail file, you will be asked if you would like to archive the documents! The archiving process will be initiated and the documents will be removed from the live mail file (if configured this way) and the Archive folder will be empty. It's just something super swank that Lotus has done.
